EMP Professional Development
EMP PD
The EMP offers a variety of professional development options to support schools and systems have success with the Explicit Mathematics Program. This includes:
- In-built Implementation Guide: All schools using the EMP have access to 3 hours of free professional learning built in to the EMP program. This should always be the starting point for building capacity in your context.
- In-person EMP Workshops: Throughout the year we run a series of full-day EMP masterclasses, designed to prepare EMP leaders and practitioners to have increased success with the program in their context. See all upcoming masterclasses here.
- Bespoke coaching: For a bespoke training option, the EMP has a number of trained coaches who can visit schools for a tailored training approach. Get in touch via our contact page to explore this option.
The Explicit Mathematics Podcast is also an excellent form of Professional Development and includes a variety of episodes to support schools, teachers, and leaders with effective EMP implementation.
Educate your team about EMP and its underpinning principles
Leaders have asked us, ‘How can I get my team ready for the EMP?’ Aside from setting aside 3 hours at the start of the year to run through our in-built implementation training with all staff, there is lots you can do to prepare for success.
Here are some ideas of things you could do with staff to prepare for the EMP:
- Watch the EMP’s two Think Forward Educator webinars. 1. Explicit Mathematics Teaching – Unlocking the science of mathematics in the primary classroom, 2. Key Instructional Routines in the Primary Mathematics Classroom (you will need a free TFE log-in to access these recordings). Watch these with staff in an after-school PD session. Pause periodically for reflection, questions and discussion.
- Direct staff to the EMP’s Explicit Mathematics Podcast and have them listen to the episode on the planning that goes into an EMP lesson, or another of your choice. You could set an episode or two as independent listening over a fortnight, add some pre-questions to get your team thinking, then set aside 15 minutes in a following staff meeting for teachers to respond to these questions in small groups.
- Do some professional learning with staff on some of the underpinning principles for the EMP including Cognitive Load Theory, Spaced Practice, Interleaving, The Testing Effect, Daily Reviews, and more. There are a multitude of ways to do this, the main idea is just to provide teachers with deeper knowledge of the ‘why’ behind the EMP.
Additionally, our introduction to the EMP for new schools webinar covers many common questions asked by schools and teachers when starting out. Follow this link for this webinar, starting from a compelling testimonial from a school currently using EMP.
Finally, EMP Co-founder Ollie Lovell has written a series of posts on the power of scripted programs which help to address some common misconceptions around this form of instruction:
