EMP Professional Development
A variety of PD options to help schools and systems succeed with the Explicit Mathematics Program.
In-built PD
All schools using the EMP have access to the EMP Guide to Success: 3 hours of free professional learning built in to the program. This should always be the starting point for building capacity in your context.
EMP Masterclasses
Throughout the year we run a series of full-day EMP masterclasses, designed to prepare EMP leaders and practitioners to have increased success with the program in their context. See all upcoming masterclasses here.
Remote Coaching
Prefer a flexible, remote option? The EMP also offers online coaching, including a lower-cost written video feedback format and a live video consult, with no school visit required. More detail can be found here.
Bespoke PD
For schools wanting tailored, in-person training, the EMP has a number of trained coaches who can visit your school to deliver a training approach built around your context. Get in touch to arrange bespoke coaching for your school.
EMPodcast
The Explicit Mathematics Podcast is also an excellent form of Professional Development and includes a variety of episodes to support schools, teachers, and leaders with effective EMP implementation.
Initial Learning Resources
Leaders have asked us, ‘How can I get my team ready for the EMP?’ Aside from setting aside 3 hours at the start of the year to run through our in-built implementation training with all staff, there is lots you can do to prepare for success.
Here are some ideas of things you could do with staff to prepare for the EMP:
Watch the EMP’s two Think Forward Educator webinars (Explicit Mathematics Teaching: Unlocking the science of mathematics in the primary classroom, and Key Instructional Routines in the Primary Mathematics Classroom) with staff in an after-school PD session, pausing periodically for reflection, questions and discussion (free Think Forward Educators log-in required).
Direct staff to the Explicit Mathematics Podcast and have them listen to the episode on the planning that goes into an EMP lesson, or another of your choice. Set an episode as independent listening over a fortnight, then set aside 15 minutes in a following staff meeting to discuss.
Do some professional learning with staff on underpinning principles for the EMP, including Cognitive Load Theory, Spaced Practice, Interleaving, The Testing Effect, Daily Reviews, and more. The main idea is to give teachers a deeper knowledge of the ‘why’ behind the EMP.
Run our introduction-to-the-EMP webinar for new schools, which covers many common questions asked by schools and teachers when starting out.
